THOMPSON - A congratulatory pat on the back from his car owner Bob Garbarino elicited a smile across the face of driver Bobby Santos III after qualifying Saturday at Thompson International Speedway for Sunday's Whelen Modified Tour season ending World Series of Speedway Racing 150.
And as quickly as the smile arrived it was gone, replaced with the serious look of a driver on a mission. It typified perfectly the rock Santos has been for most of this season, his first driving full-time on the Whelen Modified Tour.
"I don't think anything can get to the kid," said Garbarino, of Mystic. "You talk to him and try to give him motivation and get him pumped up and you just don't see it. He's just solid, nothing fazes him."
For Santos, the hope is that the real celebrating will come at some point Sunday evening.
