Denny Hamlin: Jimmie's not in my head, I'm in his

In Thursday's press conference, Jimmie Johnson pursued what was, for him, the equivalent of a pro wrestling psych-out, trying to get into Denny Hamlin's head by saying that Hamlin was the nervous one. And indeed, Hamlin did appear a bit nervous, bracketed as he was by the cool confidence of Johnson and the needling of Kevin Harvick.

Johnson followed that up in his Friday morning media session with another shot, noting that he slept just fine, but that Hamlin probably didn't. When informed of that comment, Hamlin, who's apparently had about enough, replied, "If he keeps bringing up my name, then he's pretty much worried about me."

Maybe yes, maybe no. What's obvious is that all three drivers are doing their best to get at each other, and Johnson and Harvick are clearly landing the most shots. Harvick has gone after Hamlin's car and setup, while Johnson has attacked his frame of mind.

Perhaps it's a coincidence that Hamlin qualified 37th. Perhaps not.

Regardless, Hamlin on Friday tried to clarify what he meant by feeling "awkward" on the dais during Thursday's conference. "What I meant by awkward was that they had all the videos, the drivers' spats back and forth, this that and the other right at the beginning," he told Yahoo! Sports. "And you're looking out, you can't see anyone out with the lights on you, and you're sitting next to your competitors on either side. So, that part was the small awkward part. It took about five minutes to get over.  But I thought it went good. I thought you got a sense of where everyone's head was at."

So Hamlin now knows -- he's all in Harvick and Johnson's heads. But is he a threat or a target?

ARCA Racing Series Aligns with Talladega, Chicagoland,
Kansas for Companion Event Weekends

(TOLEDO, Ohio) - Continuing its history of racing alongside NASCAR's three premier touring divisions, the ARCA Racing Series has announced three additional dates for the 2011 race season.

Talladega Superspeedway will host the series on Friday, April 15 to open a weekend of NASCAR Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series action, and Kansas Speedway will do the same on Friday, Oct. 7 before its event weekend in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Chicagoland Speedway will welcome ARCA on Saturday, June 4 as the first event of a same-day doubleheader with the Nationwide Series.

Notably, the Chicagoland event aligns with the Nationwide Series for the first time, and moves from its former slot in late August or early September. In 2009 and 2010, the event had taken place on the same day as a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event at the Joliet, Ill. track.

Additionally, the Kansas event date moves back to a Friday, where it had been situated in 2007. The series' races at the Kansas City, Kan. track in 2009 and 2010 had taken place on Thursdays.

"These three tracks are great facilities in great markets, and speak to the long-standing relationship between ARCA and the International Speedway Corporation tracks, which dates back to ARCA's first race at Daytona in 1964. This is a real opportunity for our teams and drivers to be on track during the high-visibility ISC race weekends," said Ron Drager, president of ARCA.

"Our relationship with these tracks is continually evolving, as evidenced by Kansas moving our race from a Thursday afternoon to a Friday evening and expanding our potential audience, and Chicagoland offering this opportunity for us to run with the Nationwide Series."

Talladega has hosted 48 previous ARCA Racing Series races, with the most recent race won by rookie Dakoda Armstrong in April. Grant Adcox is ARCA's all-time leading winner on the 2.66-mile superspeedway oval, with five wins. Davey Allison and Tim Steele each won four times at the historic Alabama track, which hosted ARCA for the first time in 1969.

Chicagoland and Kansas - both 1.5-mile ovals - have hosted 10 ARCA Racing Series eventsPatrick Sheltra apiece since each opened in the summer of 2001. Current series champion won at Chicagoland in August to take his second victory of 2010, and rising star Ty Dillon won for the first time in his ARCA Racing Series career at Kansas in September.

The following race dates for the 2011 ARCA Racing Series schedule have already been announced:

Feb. 12 - Daytona International Speedway
May 1 - Salem Speedway
June 11 - Pocono Raceway
June 17 - Michigan International Speedway
June 25 - Winchester Speedway
Aug. 6 - Pocono Raceway
Sept. 17 - Salem Speedway

The remainder of the schedule will be released shortly. Meanwhile, the thrilling 2010 campaign will close Saturday, Dec. 4, with the series' Championship Awards Banquet at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Ky., near Cincinnati.

Two at the Triangle for 25th Consecutive Year;
ARCA Announces Pocono Dates for 2011 Season

(TOLEDO, Ohio) - Pocono Raceway, the 2.5-mile triangular track in Long Pond, Pa., will host the ARCA Racing Series for two event dates in 2011, continuing a strong relationship which stretches back to 1969. As is tradition, the ARCA Racing Series will twice be featured as a companion event to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

The season's first race at Pocono - an 80-lap, 200-mile event - is scheduled for Saturday, June 11. The second event - scheduled for 50 laps, or 125 miles - will take place Saturday, Aug. 6 in conjunction with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race that day. Both events take place one day before NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.

"Pocono Raceway is an integral part of our series, with superspeedway speeds and short track and road course turns," said Ron Drager, president of ARCA. "When a driver is transitioning from a short track career to superspeedway racing as many of our drivers do, Pocono is often the track to do just that. It's a great place for someone to run their first superspeedway race."

"Racing at Pocono takes on special significance because of our long-term relationship with the Mattioli family, especially Dr. Joseph and Rose (Mattioli) as well as Brandon and Nick Igdalsky, third generation family members in track management. In addition, the track's location near major East Coast markets is important to our series."

2011 will be the 25th consecutive year that ARCA has contested two annual races at Pocono Raceway. Bob Schacht won both races at the track in 1987, the first year that ARCA scheduled two races on the "Tricky Triangle." This season's events will be the 52nd and 53rd for the ARCA Racing Series on the 2.5-mile oval at Pocono Raceway. Craig Goess won the 50th in June, and Robb Brent followed that with a win in July's race, the first 50-lap event for ARCA at the track.

Nick Igdalsky, the senior vice president of the track, raced a full season in the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards for the first time in 2010 and finished the year 13th in overall driver points. Igdalsky spoke about his unique connection as executive and competitor.

"This is a tradition, and something we always look forward to doing every year. There's that personal date in some of our hearts with ARCA, and we've been associated with the series from very early on," Igdalsky said. "We plan on having ARCA accompany every race we have at Pocono."

Tim Steele is the all-time wins leader at Pocono with nine (including five consecutive from 1996-98), and he is closely followed by Schacht (six) and Bob Keselowski (five). Familiar names like Ryan Newman and Joey Logano dot the winner list.

Races at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 12, Michigan International Speedway on June 17, Salem Speedway on May 1 and Sept. 17, and Winchester Speedway on June 25 have already been announced, and the remainder of the diverse 2011 ARCA Racing Series schedule will be released shortly. Meanwhile, the thrilling 2010 campaign will close Saturday, Dec., with the series' Championship Awards Banquet at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Ky., near Cincinnati.

Days Later, James Civali Still Shaking His Head Over Southern Whelen Modified Tour Season Ending Event

THOMPSON - Whelen Modified Tour driver James Civali is hoping for a little less drama this weekend at Thompson International Speedway than what he experienced Thursday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

James Civali NHMS 9-16-10.jpgIt's probably a good bet that he doesn't have worry about anything at Thompson topping what happened to him in Charlotte.

Civali, of Meriden, went into the Whelen Southern Modified Tour season finale at Charlotte Motor Speedway holding a three-point lead at the top of the standings.

After the dust had settled he left the track having lost the championship but carrying with him the satisfaction that in a small way he got to serve some justice out.

NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES
TUMS FAST RELIEF 500
MARTINSVILLE SPEEDWAY
TEAM CHEVY DRIVER PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT
October 22, 2010

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT/NATIONAL GUARD FAMILIES APPRECIATION CHEVROLET met with media and discussed his chances in the Chase, racing at Martinsville, mind games, Talladega, and more. FULL TRANSCRIPT:

HOW WAS PRACTICE?
"It was pretty good. We were just working on qualifying runs. We weren't able to get that really good lap up there like some guys did right there at the end, but all in all, so far a good day."

IN A CHAMPIONSHIP RUN, WHEN DO THE MIND GAMES START? HOW MANY MIND GAMES ARE THERE IN TERMS OF WHEN YOU'RE SPEAKING TO THE MEDIA AND USING THEM AS A MESSAGE TO SOMEONE ELSE? ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THAT TACTIC?
"No. You know what? Fast race cars are the best kind of mind games you can have. In all my experience I think that's what speaks the loudest and what we've been able to utilize; just going out there and performing. That's the way I've always looked at it. But in some tight battles I think the guys that play the mind games are the ones that feel the weakest; you know the ones that are trying to compensate for something that they're lacking. That's my opinion."

THIS IS ONE OF YOUR BEST TRACKS, BUT THE NO. 48 (JIMMIE JOHNSON) AND THE NO. 11 (DENNY HAMLIN) HAVE BEEN BETTER RECENTLY. HOW FRUSTRATING IS IT THAT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT OPPORTUNITY EXCEPT FOR THOSE GUYS?
"Yeah, you know it's just the cycle with the way things go in racing. It doesn't matter how good you were the last race or in the past, it's what you're doing currently in putting up those numbers. While we still come here and lead laps and at certain parts of the race I feel like we've got the best car; it seems like the second half of the race we haven't been as strong as the guys you mentioned like Hamlin and Jimmie. We're always taking notes and trying to come back stronger and address those things.

"So far we're just kind of business as usual here at Martinsville and tomorrow we'll focus on some things. One thing that's difficult is to mimic exactly what the track does during the race because this track lays rubber in the middle part of the race towards the end and it never does that in practice. So, you're working around it. In the race I'm having to change my line and change the car and in practice we are never having to deal with that. So it's hard to try to find out exactly what we need to be better in that situation. And it seems like some of our competitors have done a little bit better job of that."

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO GET OVER A RACE LIKE LAST WEEK WHEN YOU LOST SO MANY POINTS? ARE YOU OVER IT BY SUNDAY NIGHT OR ARE YOU STILL DISAPPOINTED NOW AS YOU WERE SUNDAY?
"Yeah, I'm pretty good at moving on past things. I'll still reflect when the season is over and next week it might flash into my head a little bit like gosh I wish that race hadn't gone that way. But I was so busy with my family this week, and that's a great thing about going home and having a three-year-old and a two-month-old is you just sink yourself into that and you focus on the important things and put days like that behind you; things that you can't control or get them back. And then you just start thinking about the next weekend. I've been excited about Martinsville for several weeks. I love this track. We run good here. And so I guess if we weren't coming to Martinsville it would be a little bit harder to put a race like Charlotte behind us. But yeah, I felt like we had an opportunity there to maintain that points gap that we had. And to lose as many points as we did was certainly no fun. But we moved past it pretty soon, pretty quick."

(INAUDIBLE) ON PUTTING A MARTINSVILLE RACE BEHIND THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN HIS
"I would say that I've won enough races to know that when it's meant to happen, it's going to happen. And that one wasn't meant to be for us. You know, we didn't have the best car. Steve (Letarte) did a great job making the right call in the pits there and it would have been nice to have pulled it off. We've pulled races off like that in the past. This year we don't seem to be able to pull those off. So what we need to focus on now is having the best car and put ourselves in position to have the fastest car and win the race that way. That's our mindset right now and continues to be that way until the race is over on Sunday."

DO YOU THINK YOU'RE OUT OF IT?
"Yeah, unless some major things happen I think we are. I know it's not something that I'm thinking about. We're approaching the races the same way. It doesn't change how we do that. But I can't say that we've got this weight on our shoulders of the pressure of a championship. I feel like in some ways, that's been taken off of us because I think we're too many points back."

NEXT WEEK AT TALLADEGA WITH FIVE LAPS TO GO, WHERE IDEALLY DO YOU WANT TO BE?
"Second or third, probably; it just depends on who you're pushing and who is pushing you. The lead is not a bad place but it depends on who is behind you. If it's a teammate, then you probably feel like your chances of finishing first or second are pretty good. If it's somebody else, you might get shuffled earlier and you could end up 15th. So, I think that probably it's better to be 2nd or 3rd."

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DRAFTING PARTNER?
"Whoever is pushing me. It doesn't matter who it is. You kind of get a sense throughout the race who is working with you, who you're working with, you build up sort of a commitment to one another and you kind of talk on the radio and say hey, let him know I'm going to push him, I'm not going anywhere.  It gets to a point at Talladega nowadays where you're just happy to finish in the top five. It's not just about the win. A top five is like a win at a place like Talladega because you survived. So if you find a guy you're working well with that you think you can get up there and worst case scenario finish second or third because you're pushing him, you're going to try to win the race but you're not going to risk too much and you're going to do what you can to finish the race. If you can work with a guy and have a pretty good shot at finishing second, then that's a good guy. That's a good guy to be working with."

IS IT BETTER TO BE LUCKY OR GOOD AT TALLADEGA?
"Talladega, I don't think, has a whole lot to do with skills, so I would say luck will play out a lot more."

HAVE YOU FOUND THAT YOUR LINE STAYED PRETTY CONSISTENT HERE OVER THE LAST TWO OR THREE YEARS?  IT SEEMED LIKE YOU WERE EXPERIMENTING A LOT DURING PRACTICE.
?Well that?s what we were just talking about?the line changes a lot during the race because rubber gets laid down from the right side tires and you don?t have that in practice, so you can?t really experiment with it, it doesn?t do the same thing that it does during the race.  But during the race, I?ll experiment with my line.  As soon as that rubber gets laid down, I?ll experiment with it quite a bit?car changes, line changes, and you can adjust.?

EVERYBODY TALKS ABOUT JIMMIE HERE, BUT THIS IS A TRACK WHERE YOU?RE ALSO EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL.  DO YOU THINK PEOPLE OVERLOOK YOU?
?We might not have had the wins here in recent years like those guys have, but we have been really, really strong.  All we have to do is get a little bit better and we can pull ourselves right back into victory lane here.  Even when we?re not winning, we?re putting those guys in position not to make mistakes?if they make a mistake we?re going to be right there and pounce on them, but they haven?t made a lot of mistakes over the last few years.?

WILL WE FIND OUT ABOUT YOUR SPONSOR NEXT WEEK?
?You?ll find out about one of them on Wednesday, I believe.  I don?t know what all they are going to put into that announcement, so I don?t know all the details.?

YOU?VE GOT THE FANS SAYING THEY WANT SOMEONE OTHER THAN JIMMIE TO WIN; YOU?VE GOT THE COMPETITORS SAYING THAT JIMMIE IS A NICE GUY, BUT THEY?D LIKE TO SEE SOMEONE ELSE WIN.  WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?
?Well, I mean, I just want to see myself win the championship, but if we can?t win it we want Jimmie to do it.  We want Hendrick Motorsports to win another championship and keep that streak alive.  It?s an incredible thing that they?re doing and you?ve got to respect that.  I think we?ll look back at it somewhere down the road if they pull this off and go for six next year, it?s history making.  It?s hard to appreciate it when you?re in it for any of us?even them.  It?s easy to say that you want somebody else to win, but what they?re proving right now is that if somebody else wants to win, they?ve got to come and fight really hard for it.  They?ve got to be a better team, and right now I have not seen a better team out there but anything could still happen and I think that it?s easy to say, ?sure, we?d like to see someone else,? when someone else has won four years in a row.?

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN DALE JR. WAS REALLY CONFIDENT AT TALLADEGA?WON FOUR OR FIVE RACE.  WHAT DO YOU THINK THE DIFFERENCE IS BETWEEN NOW AND TODAY?
?Car.  The car is different.  Has he won a COT race?  I mean a COT race to me, means that you?re going to see someone different win all the time.  It just changes how you go about it, getting yourself in position and drafting is so much different.  With the old car, you really could put yourself in a position to win that race and work through it and think about it and plan it and know what your car is going to do.  Nowadays, you just look for the revolving door?you just try to figure out who is going to get through it at the right time.  We?ve got these two-car breakaways now, so that has played a little bit more of a role too.  If you get two guys that get themselves into position and know how to do that well?I think that?s about the only skill set that has really set in over the last few races at Talladega is two guys hooking up.  It seems like we work on that more and more now in practice and more guys are able to figure it out.  Then it goes back to the team?can you keep your engine from overheating, how long can you hook up like that without blowing the engine.  I don?t think Jr. has lost anything at the restrictor plate tracks, I just think the style of racing is different.?

DO YOU THINK THE RELAXED BUMP DRAFTING RULES HAVE HELPED THE PRODUCT OF RACING AT TALLADEGA?
?I don?t know if that relaxed bump drafting is associated with Daytona and Talladega?I think that ?boys have at it? thing is not geared at Talladega.  So I guess I?m not on the same page as you, and I think the bump drafting has been addressed.  It was addressed more this past time at Talladega than it was the year before, so I still think the bump drafting is something that we have to cautious and conscious of because that?s not ?guys have at it.?  That just gets some kind of stupid, so we have to manage that.  I think NASCAR might not be cracking down on it, I think it somehow polices itself but I think it does get to a point where they have to step in.  That is the one place where I would like to see them step in?still?and see them police is that because that?s not the same as some of the ?aggressive? driving that you?re seeing at some of these other tracks.?

IN THE SPRING RACE HERE, DENNY CAME IN HERE, TOOK TIRES AND WENT ON TO WIN THE RACE.  OBVIOUSLY THAT WASN?T THE ONLY THING THAT HAPPENED IN THE SCENARIO, BUT WITH HOW THAT PLAYED OUT DO YOU THINK FOUR TIRES IS THE WAY YOU HAVE TO GO WITH 20 LAPS LEFT?
?That same statement and those words are the reason why we haven?t won races this year.  At the times when we should?ve taken four tires, it seemed like taking two tires is what worked or staying out worked out.  At times when we came in and took two tires, four tires worked.  And it all comes down to cautions?you never know to plan when those cautions are going to fall.  So because of that, it?s kind of like flipping a coin for a crew chief as to which route is the best to take.  Had the caution not come out they way it did Denny probably wouldn?t have won the race, but I?m pretty sure that even if we had taken four we still would have finished behind the 11.  So I think that?s kind of the route that Steve [Letarte, crew chief] took?that was our chance at winning the race so let?s go for it.  We weren?t as good as the 11 at that point in the race.?

DO THE MYSTERIOUS CAUTIONS FOR DEBRIS FRUSTRATE THE DRIVERS AS MUCH AS THEY DO THE VIEWERS?
?I can only answer from my experience?there were really no mysterious cautions here at Martinsville.  Kyle Busch wrecked and they had to throw the caution.  If you?re leading a race and the caution comes out and you don?t think it?s justified, that?s frustrating, it is.  Sometimes it?s a mistake and sometimes you never really get the answer as to why it happened, but that?s just a part of racing that you have to deal with.  When you?ve been around this sport long enough those go for you and against you all the time.?

Every race has its thorn: Bret Michaels is marshal at Homestead

Get those lighters and bandanas ready, sports fans, because Bret Michaels, Poison singer and reality-show star, will be the Grand Marshal at Homestead. Whooooo!!!!

The bandana'd (and potentially hair-extensioned) one will give the "Dudes, start your engines" command, and he'll also sing the National Anthem. And if he doesn't have a bevy of silicon-enhanced babes flanking him at every turn, I'll be severely disappointed. Wrestler Bill Goldberg will handle the starting duties for Saturday's Nationwide race.

This isn't Poison's first entry into the NASCAR arena. In 2002, Derrike Cope ran a Poison paint scheme at Pocono. Sadly, it was nothing but a rough time, as Cope had engine failure and finished 41st. Here's the paint scheme, courtesy of Jayski:

Neon green and bright purple. Man, the '80s were awesome, even if they happened in 2002.

Ford 400 race notes: Timing bad for Truex

Denny Hamlin pits after sustaining damage to the front right splitter after a spin on the 24th lap of the Ford 400 on Sunday. (Photo: Getty Images)

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Martin Truex had a solid shot to win the Ford 400 until a right-rear tire cost him a lap on the 199th lap of the Sprint Cup finale.

While championship contenders Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick paid attention to each other, Truex and Carl Edwards dominated the race.

When Truex’s Toyota suddenly slowed, Johnson narrowly missed hitting him. Truex was barely out of the pits when Jeff Gordon’s blown engine brought out a yellow flag, but Truex wasn’t in position to get the lap back.

Under caution, bad blood between Joey Logano apparently led Montoya, who had clashed with Logano earlier in the race, to ram Logano’s Toyota. Mission apparently accomplished, Montoya’s Chevy retired to the garage area.

* * *

SICKENING FEELING--The first gasp occurred on the 24th lap of the Ford 400. That’s when the Sprint Cup point leader, Denny Hamlin, spun on the back straight and was fortunate not to have his hopes dashed.

Hamlin’s Toyota tangled with Greg Biffle’s Ford off turn two. In radio communication with his crew, Hamlin blamed Biffle, but the replay did not support his view. When the cars sideswiped, most of the movement seemed to be the No. 11 (Hamlin) drifting into the No. 16.

Luck favored Hamlin, whose Toyota wasn’t seriously damaged even after it spun around and around for half the length of the Homestead-Miami Speedway back straight.

The perils weren’t over. On the 67th lap, Hamlin had to make an unscheduled pit stop.

* * *

WHAT’S IT TAKE?--On lap 140, Hamlin miraculously avoided a back-straight crash that began with contact between his JGR teammate, Joey Logano, and Juan Pablo Montoya.

The 164th lap produced a caution when the Raybestos Only Rookie of the Year, Kevin Conway, spun in turn four.

* * *

POINT/COUNTERPOINT--Kevin Harvick led the field out of the pits on the 189th lap, apparently meaning he had secured five bonus points for leading a lap. NASCAR officials then penalized Harvick for speeding entering pit road, which Harvick strenuously protested.

In radio conversation to his crew, Harvick said it was “impossible” because he trailed the No. 56, Martin Truex, down pit road. NASCAR provided alleged documentation to Harvick’s crew chief, Gil Martin, that did not come close to placating Harvick.

The penalty stripped Harvick of the bonus points.

* * *

ONE LEADS TO ANOTHER--No caution flag waved when the cars of Kurt Busch and David Reutimann tangled on the fourth lap, but the crumpled right-front fender on Reutimann’s Toyota led to the first yellow.

On lap 18, Reutimann’s tire, undoubtedly rubbing since the earlier incident, exploded, sending the No. 00 into the wall a second time, this time on the opposite end of the track from the first incident.

So with injuries having sidelined him, and Kasey Kahne borrowing his ride, Brian Vickers is taking it easy getting ready for 2011, you'd have to figure, right? Not according to this latest little Red Bull advertisement/docudrama:

* * *

Put the Zamboni in the wall, Junior!

Friday night, Dale Earnhardt Jr. debuted the new paint scheme for the 88 at, of all places, a Phoenix Coyotes hockey game. Designed by Jason Corino, the scheme was selected from about 10,000 entries in a Diet Mountain Dew "Paint the 88" contest. (Program note: we talked to Junior about the paint scheme, as well as fantasy football and other stuff, for a podcast that'll be live early next week.)

For more info, check out Mountain Dew on Facebook, and see below for a full view of the car without that guy standing in the way.

D1 Street Legal 2010 Ebisu West Course (Pics)

Last weekend on a blazing hot Sunday September 5th, the 5th round of D1 Street Legal was held at Ebisu west (nishi) course.

Emily from Powervehicles.com made it through qualifying for the ladies "Venus Challenge" in her bright pink S14 silvia on the Saturday and ran in the first battle of the day on Sunday.

Unfortunately, she was beaten by the #1 qualifier of the day (3UP green 180sx).

Andy from Powervehicles.com and Chris Dejager entered but just missed the cut on the Saturday so they didn't get to run on the Sunday.

The winner of the D1SL round was Tanaka in his red and black S14 Silvia who went against D1 driver Tezuka Tsuyoshi in his white R34 Skyline.

Tanaka knocked out Nakamura early in the battles so everyone had his eye on him on the day. Great driving and he deserved the win!

Another great result came from Sumika (Team Orange - yellow 180sx) who placed 1st in the ladies Venus Challenge and 3rd in the Street Legal.

Maybe one day Disco Stu will make a D1 SL appearance.

Actually, this day I got a few laps practice in on School course and minami before brushing the wall and bending my tie rod.

Oh well, practice makes perfect :)

Lingenfelter Camaro
Lingenfelter Camaro dips into the eights - Click above to watch video after the jump

Prepare to have your concept of the laws of physics twisted by the guys and gals at Lingenfelter. The crew have turned their attention to building one of the meanest full-interior, fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro drag cars on the planet. In order to hustle 4,075 pounds of General Motors muscle down the track, Lingenfelter has dropped in a fully built LS9 V8 with an Eaton supercharger and all the guts to match. The heads were fully ported and loaded with titanium intake valves and hollow, sodium-filled exhaust valves for the easiest breathing possible. Throw in a set of long-tube headers, a two-stage nitrous system and twin fuel pumps and you've got a lump good for a mind-boggling 1,243 horsepower.

Lingenfelter has unsurprisingly ditched the stock clutch in favor of an RPS triple carbon piece, and a unique 9.5-inch billet rear differential with a 4.10 gear puts power to both rear wheels.

By some miracle of driving prowess, John Ebert was able to wrestle this machine down the quarter mile in 8.99 seconds at 158 mph. Hit the jump to watch it happen.

Multiple New Events Highlight The 2011 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Schedule

NASCAR on Friday announced the 2011 Whelen Modified Tour schedule and the big surprise came with the news of the addition of a new event at Thompson International Speedway for next year.

Whelen Modified Tour.jpgNew events for next season at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Delaware Speedway in Delaware, Ont. had already been expected before the official announcement of the schedule, so it was a unique new show at Thompson that proved the only drama left with the schedule announcement.

Thompson will add a fourth Whelen Modified Tour event next year. The show, on Sept. 11, will bring the Whelen Modified Tour and Whelen Southern Modified Tour together for multiple races on one card.

A Little Parking Lot Battle To Start World Series Sunday Morning At A Hung Over Thompson Speedway

THOMPSON - There's something about driving into a racetrack at 9 a.m. and seeing the Saturday night zombies slowly stumbling through parking lot with beers in hand already.

The Fast Track.jpgYeah, that right there screams World Series Sunday at Thompson International Speedway.

The track is slowly coming to life here for another long day of racing. The AC/DC is blaring from midway. Nothing like a little Dirty Deeds to bring things to life here at Thompson.

It seems we're lucky we even made it in here this morning. One thing you learn about World Series Sunday, besides avoiding running over the zombies, is that parking is cut throat. The campers take up so much of the lots that it makes it kind of a strategic little mayhem finding a place to park a street vehicle.

Denny Hamlin Already Looking Toward 2011

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Only 25 laps into Sunday's Ford 400 NASCAR season finale, Denny Hamlin realized his day was going to be long, and his hopes of holding off his two championship challengers diminished as the hot South Florida afternoon wore on.

When the green flag dropped, his 15-point championship lead over four-time defending Sprint Cup series champ Jimmie Johnson technically vanished, based on Hamlin's 38th-place starting position compared to Johnson's sixth.

Then on lap 25, Hamlin collided with Greg Biffle, sending Hamlin's No. 11 FedEx Toyota spinning on the infield grass -- an omen for what would come. Tire problems, pit road miscommunication and then an ill-timed caution period late in the race spelled his ultimate doom. The 30-year-old driver finished 14th in the race and became the first driver in NASCAR's seven-year Chase playoff format not to win the title when leading the championship with one race remaining.

"It's tough, trust me, these years don't come by too often in anyone's career,'' said Hamlin, who finished championship runner-up, 39 points behind the newly crowned five-time champion Johnson.

"I was privileged enough to be part of the closest championship in (Chase) history and give it my best effort, but it wasn't enough today. Our car got banged up and we just couldn't overcome it.''

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 8, 2010) - She may not be able to wave the green flag or give the command "Gentleman, Start your Engines," but a 13-year-old Labrador retriever named Sunshine will serve as the honorary grand marshal for the Dollar General 300 on Oct. 15 at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Sunshine earned the distinction by winning the ALPO Honorary Grand Marshal contest, conducted by Performance Racing Network. To win the contest, which included a trip for two to the Dollar General 300, Sunshine's owner, Christy Bradburn, of Massanutten, Va., submitted a short essay written from Sunshine's point of view describing her favorite "real dog" behavior and why it's time to let dogs be dogs again.

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (October 8, 2010) ? Kevin Swindell, son of three-time national Sprint Car champion Sammy Swindell, earned his first career pole in the ARCA Racing Series presented by REMAX and Menards Friday during qualifying at Rockingham Speedway for Saturday's season finale American 200 presented by Black's Tire and Auto Service.

Swindell, driving a Toyota, posted a 145.378-mph, 24.763-second lap on Menards Pole Day presented by Ansell, to edge Chad Finley for the No. 1 starting position. Finley's Chevrolet clocked in at 145.361 mph, 24.766 seconds.

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 8, 2010) - Some of the fastest drivers, car owners and mechanics ever to turn left will give it their all to go straight on Tuesday, Oct. 12, as NASCAR Night returns to zMAX Dragway.

In past NASCAR Night events, more than 100 NASCAR industry personnel have descended on the Bellagio of drag strips to take their cars down the concrete quarter-mile. Participants can race anything they wish down the drag strip, making this a true "run what you brung" event. Previous NASCAR Night drag racers included NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth; team owner Rick Hendrick; and crew chiefs Chad Knaus and Lance McGrew.

SAN DIEGO (Oct. 7, 2010) ? The fourth-annual Jimmie Johnson Foundation Golf Tournament and Dinner Auction raised more than $525,000, the fourth-consecutive year that the charity has surpassed the half-million dollar mark.

All proceeds from the event will stay in the San Diego area to fund the 2010 Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Lowe's Toolbox for Education Champions Grants, which range from $25,000-$100,000.

NASCAR drivers Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers, Juan Pablo Montoya, Boris Said and Casey Mears, along with former NFL player Jason Sehorn and IRL driver Oriol Servia, joined more than 150 guests for Wednesday's golf tournament at The Grand Del Mar in San Diego.
