This holiday season, watch the interstate for drifting big rigs

Is there a vehicle that's too big to drift? Hot Rod magazine decided to find out, and so it hired Mike Ryan, nine-time winner of the Pike's Peak hill climb, to take a big rig for a little drifting. The results:

Yeah, that was cool and all, but let's see you do it with the trailer attached, Mike.

Oh, and make sure you watch starting at the three-minute mark, when the Freightliner big rig does a bizarre little asphalt ballet with a Mustang up on two wheels. Beats the hell out of modern dance, I'll tell you that.

Post-Race Quotes
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

BRAD KESELOWSKI (No. 12 Penske Racing Dodge Charger) Finished 10th
?It was a good solid day for us and we got a good finish out of it.  It was a good weekend for us, winning the Nationwide yesterday and getting a top 10 here today.  I?m happy but now, I?m ready to go home. ?

DID YOU EXPECT YOUR FIRST TOP 10 TO COME AT A SHORT TRACK?  ?I think it?s going to come every week and so does the team.  You can?t think of it as we?re coming to this race or that race and that?s where we?re going to run well.  You?ve got to run hard every week and you?ve got to believe you can run up front every week.  It could have come at the first race at Daytona and I would have believed it.  It?s just a matter of getting everything right and running a good race.?

WHEN WAS THE CAR AT ITS BEST DURING THE RACE?  ?In the middle part of the race, we probably weren?t that good, but at the start and at the end we were solid.  Good pit stops and good restarts gave us good track position.  Put it all together and you end up with a top 10.?

JAY GUY (Crew Chief, No. 12 Penske Racing Dodge Charger)
?It was a very solid run for this Penske Dodge.  All the guys have worked hard all year long, it?s a shame it has taken this long to get a top 10.  It?s really good for Brad, it?s good for Mr. Penske and for all the folks at Dodge that help support us and put this program together.  We?re looking forward to building momentum for the rest of the year and into 2011.  Runs like today give you a little more pep in your step and pride going into the next race.?

DID YOU EXPECT THE FIRST TOP 10 TO COME ON A SHORT TRACK?  ?Brad is such an accomplished race car driver, so calculating, that it wouldn?t surprise me anywhere we go that we could get a top 10, a top five or a win the way he approaches driving a race car.  He?s a student of the game and a really smooth driver.  It was a good all-around effort from everybody and Brad did a great job today.
I?m real happy for this Penske Racing team.?

KURT BUSCH (No. 2 Operation Home Front/Miller Lite Dodge Charger)  Finished 16th
?Man, just a lot of good, hard Martinsville racing out there today.  It was a battle for all 500 laps.  This place has been a monster for me over the years.  We started behind with our Miller Lite Dodge, qualifying 29th on Friday.  Anytime you?re short-track racing, track position and pit stall selection is critical, especially here.  It was a battle.  We started back in the pack, worked our way up and gained a ton of track position.  Then we came in under green and had to pit a second time because of some loose lug nuts which cost us all of our position.  We fought our way back inside the top 10, dropped to 15th, back inside the top 12; just a back and forth effort all day for us.  We rubbed fenders, battled and clawed all day.  There was a lot of hard racing going on all day.  We fought hard and I?m proud of our Miller Lite Dodge guys.  I thought we were going to be able to battle home a top 10, but we just didn?t get the run we needed on that last long run and dropped to 16th.?

WHAT HAPPENED TO CAUSE THE CONTACT WITH THE 24 CAR? ?Look, there was good racing all day amongst a lot of guys.  There was respect given for guys when they were getting back to the inside. (He) was on the outside lane on restarts and so yeah, he shoved me in there and I shoved him back in Turn 4.  I didn?t mean to get into him that hard, but over the years with (Jeff) Gordon here, back in the 97 (car), wrecking the 2 car, whether you?re a current Kurt fan or ex-Rusty (Wallace) fan, he?s wrecked the 2 car a lot here.?

DID THE CONTACT WITH THE 24 CAR HURT YOUR CAR AT ALL?  ?His chicken move afterward wasn?t called for, but that shows the game we?re gonna play.  One bump versus another bump, it still seems like the scorecard isn?t even.?

TRAVIS GEISLER (Crew Chief, No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger)  Finished 25th
?We actually had a decent car today.  We were going to run top 20 for sure.  We were running around 15th to 20th all day.  We were on the outside of the 47, trying to get by him.  He lost it on the inside and came up and hit us in the left front wheel.  That knocked the toe out.  There?s no stability on braking once you have that situation.  We tried to fix it up best we could, but had already lost a couple laps trying to get it repaired.  It was a tough day for us, but we?re happy for the 12 guys, their first top 10 of the year.  It?s good to see them post a good finish.?

G1 GP Summer 2010 In Ebisu West Course Wrap Up

The second round of G1GP for 2010 came and went on August 20 2010 (in typical stinkin' hot Fukushima summer weather!)

Around 30 cars and drivers showed up for the all-gaijin drift competition this time to take part in the Team Orange organized and judged comp on the Ebisu nish (west) short course.

Here we all are before the battles begin! Team Orange's Kumakubo and Suenaga stand at the front waiting to judge who will be the Gaijin champ of this round's G1GP!

Billy in his multi-colored S14 getting some air under his right wheel after cutting a little too close on the corner. Great photo courtesy of Adam from 7tune.com

Emily Loudon and Andy Gray are followed closely by Chris Dejager - what more could you expect from the PowerVehicles crew?

What would a G1GP be without Disco Stu?

I entered in my freshly acquired S13 silvia but unfortunately, did not get the result I was looking for! :(

I could make a list of excuses as long as my arm why I drove so poorly, but let's just say the car needed some fine tuning and I needed more practice!! haha

At least I got a cool keyring!

Dave Lawrie from JPP made a celebrity appearance all the way from the Gold Coast!

His lovely S14 was going well until the power steering hose came off leaving him with no steering at the top of the nishi course hill!

Better luck next time to Dave and all the other key-ants from the GC!

Adam at 7tune.com put together a short video with highlights from G1GP mostly, but also a bit of drift matsuri weekend mixed in toward the end.

The final battle in G1GP saw Andy Gray (Scotland) and Leighton Fine (Australia) go head to head in their big JZX90s!

It was very close but Leighton went home with the win and some nice prizes including new adjustable coil-overs courtesy of Zenky Racing.

Andy Gray came second and Chris "backwards entry" Dejager came in third. They both won some suspension parts from the same Zenky Racing parts company who sponsored the event.

Top 6 winners didn't go home empty handed though. They each got a 12 month Ebisu circuit gold pass which lets them drift at Ebisu as much as they want at no cost (except for a small insurance fee each time). Lucky buggers hey!?

The day ended with a massive BBQ feast and plenty of cold beer and Chu-Hi's!

G1GP is turning out to be a huge success! Can't wait for the next and final one for the year on Minami (south) course on November 12 (the day before Autumn matsuri begins). Sure to even bigger and better than ever!

If you think you've got what it takes to drift with some of the worlds best or just want a drifting experience of a life time (and you're a gaijin), come join us for any of the G1 GP competitions and/or drift matsuris. Contact me or Powervehicles for more info.

Even those F1 drivers get in on Fight Week every now and then

We in NASCARland tend to think of Formula One drivers as being dandy dilettantes, more concerned with image than the grease-under-the-fingernails reality of racing. But every so often, something goes wrong that you simply can't ignore with a simple sniff of your upturned nose while you waltz into the Monaco sunset with your Italian supermodel girlfriend.

The year? 1982. The place? The German Grand Prix. The players? Nelson Piquet and Eliseo Salazar. You can debate for yourself whether Piquet got greedy or Salazar didn't give ground, but either way, the result was the same: into the barriers for both of 'em. And then it got frisky:

Judo chop! Still, that one needed to go to the ground. Don't just walk away, Nelson! Aw, the Allison brothers would've eaten you guys alive.

Scott Speed Sues Red Bull After Team Releases Him

A NASCAR driver usually don't sue his car owner after parting ways, since taking legal action could dissuade potential future car owners from getting involved with the driver.

But after more than seven years with Red Bull in both Formula One and NASCAR, Scott Speed has made that move, suing his former team for alleged breach of contract in a complaint asking the court to award him $6.5 million, SceneDaily.com reported late Friday.

Red Bull "significantly reduced its financial commitment to Speed's race team and was unable and/or unwilling to provide [Speed] with 'supporting equipment' satisfactory for a driver of [his] skill to [be] effective [to] compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series," Speed's complaint states, according to SceneDaily.

Speed's complaint also provides a rare, inside look at the money being paid in the Sprint Cup series for a driver at his level.

According to SceneDaily, the lawsuit says Speed signed a three-year deal in September 2007 for a salary of $300,000 in 2008, $500,000 in 2009 and $1 million in 2010. He was to receive 50 percent of his purse winnings for each top-10 finish, 45 percent for finishing 11th through 20th and 40 percent for finishes of 21st or worse.

Jimmie Johnson's NASCAR Dynasty May Make Him Greatest Champion

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Jimmie Johnson joined his team on the crowded stage, hurriedly set up on the Homestead-Miami Speedway front stretch and, with confetti flying in the air, raised NASCAR's crown jewel, the Sprint Cup Series championship trophy, for an unprecedented fifth consecutive time.

Only seven-time champions Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt have more hardware. And as the humble, low-key Californian hugged his wife, kissed his infant daughter, embraced his dad and gazed out into the crowd, Johnson was struck by something that helped him realize he had finally made it.

"There was a fan standing right up front with an 'I Hate the 48' T-shirt and he gave me the thumbs-up and said, 'Congratulations,' '' the driver of the No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet recalled with a laugh. "I have people tell me they hate me, but they respect me and that's always cool. If this takes it to the next level, then right on.''

So it is for the most dominant race car driver in NASCAR history. The more he wins, the more trophies he collects, the more people clamor for someone else to step up.

How about, instead, we honor this great accomplishment and appreciate the good fortune to be witnessing sports history.

California quotes

TEAM CHEVY FROM THE DRIVER?S SEAT:

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE?S/JIMMIE JOHNSON FOUNDATION CHEVROLET ? POINTS LEADER: "Excited to go back. We have our Jimmie Johnson Foundation major fund raiser that takes place in my hometown, the area of my hometown I should say. We do a lot of great things, raise some money for a variety of things. This year it is again going to be a grant system for school districts in the area. I'm very excited to go back although there is a lot of work for me going home for the golf tournament and the dinner that is beforehand. But I really enjoy the race track. I enjoy the weather, the atmosphere, In N Out Burger, Mexican restaurants I am fond of in the area. It is always good to go home. There is a certain feeling about it. I won my first race there. My 48th race there and there are a lot of cool things about that race track for me. Oh yea, fish tacos, lots of lime. Post race add a Corona to the mix and we are in good shape."

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 SHELL-PENNZOIL CHEVROLET ? 3RD IN STANDINGS: ?In February, I feel like I let one slip away there.  I was running the 48 down, and I just brushed the wall and the car went really tight.  We still had a good finish and Jeff (Burton) ran really well there, too.  We?re looking forward to going back.  Obviously, a lot can change, it?s been a hot summer and the race track will be different, but it?s been a good race track for us over the last few years.  We need to capitalize this week and make something happen. ?We feel good about where we are right now.  We had a great car at Kansas and finished third. That's what got us here.  We have been consistent and had solid top-five finishes all year. So, we just have to keep doing those things, keep our cars in contention running up front, lead some laps and grab those bonus points when we can, and we'll see where we are when we get to Homestead."

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DUPONT/PEPSI MAX CHEVROLET ? 5TH IN STANDINGS: ?You have to have good power (at Auto Club Speedway), have to have good balance in the car.  Right now there?s a lot of stuff going around the garage with teams that are trying to run soft in the back versus stiff in the back and at a track like that, you can really experiment with because the straight-aways are so long and it?s a big, fast race track to try to get the spoiler out of the air a little bit.  Just trying to work that balance out. We do all that in simulation at the shop and based on what we?ve been running, what we?ve been seeing in the garage area that?s running good and fast, you try it and if it?s not working then you go in a different direction.?

JEFF BURTON, NO. 31 CATERPILLAR CHEVROLET ? 9TH IN STANDINGS: ?It is different than any other race track we run on as far as I am concerned. It has real low grip, very flat corners, a lot of speed.  It is completely different than Atlanta. It is completely different than (Las) Vegas. Vegas is very high grip, completely different. So we have three very distinctive mile-and-a-half and two-mile race tracks. You can perform well at one and not well at the others. If we do our jobs and we do the best we can do, then that is all we can do. We have to optimize who we are. We have to be the best we can be. I can?t worry about the No. 48 (Jimmie Johnson) or the No. 11 (Denny Hamlin) or the No. 17 (Matt Kenseth) and whether they are going to be the best they can be. I can?t control that. All I can try and control is being the best we can be.?

TONY STEWART, NO. 14 OFFICE DEPOT/OLD SPICE CHEVROLET ? 10TH IN STANDINGS: "We're not out until we're mathematically out. Who would have dreamed we would have two weeks in a row like we had the first two weeks. So it's proof it can happen. Talladega is still on the schedule (laughs) so that can jumble everything up too. So, we've just got to go out and do what we did at Kansas and that's just go out and try to win the race and take what it gives us."

CLINT BOWYER, NO. 33 THE HARTFORD CHEVROLET ? 12TH IN STANDINGS: ?California is one of those deals where you better show up fairly close or you are going to struggle. You might get yourself a decent top-10 finish but you are going to fight long and hard for it all weekend long. We were very good out there in the spring race and hopefully we can carry that on. That is a track that has been kind of hit or miss for me. But, coming off that spring race, I?ve got a lot of excitement. We have a lot better equipment. That was early in the year and our cars have changes a bunch since then. So, I think we can improve on that.?

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 39 TORNADOS CHEVROLET ? 13TH IN STANDINGS: ?We had a really good car in February at California. Our No. 39 Chevy was good all day long. We were mixing it up, and it really was the most competitive that I?ve been at California in a long time. At least that?s the way that I felt even though we had the engine failure. We were working forward every run the entire race, and we showed what we are capable of out there on a couple of those long runs. I mean, two laps before the engine failure put us out of the race, I was racing for the lead. When we came to California in February, I felt like we had made some big improvements as a team on our speedway program. I think we?ve made some big gains on that program over this year, too.  So we?re looking forward to the return trip to California. Our finish in February wasn?t indicative of how we were running, and it?s one of those finishes that we have pointed to and said that it hurt us when it came to the Chase and not making it this season. We definitely want to show how strong our program is and get a good finish at California this weekend.?

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD?S CHEVROLET ? 14TH IN STANDINGS: ?I don?t know what it is about racing at Fontana, but it?s a track that I really enjoy coming to on the circuit. Auto Club Speedway is more of a driver?s track where you as the driver can really dictate your times by which line you choose on the race track. Sometimes the high line works better and as the track changes, it could move to the middle or bottom groove, just depending on how your car seems to handle. That?s really what makes California a fun track to race on.  Obviously we came out here in February with a lot of excitement around the Daytona 500 victory and the subsequent media tour, but our team came out of the gate strong with my team winning the pole award and Juan?s team starting outside pole.  With that, and our really consistent performance since Chicago, we?re hoping to come away with a another strong effort at Auto Club Speedway.?

MARK MARTIN, NO. 5 GODADDY.COM/CARQUEST AUTO PARTS CHEVROLET ? 15TH IN STANDINGS: ?When we raced in Fontana in February, our car was really, really good. We led some laps and had a strong weekend out there and finished fourth. Since then, we?ve gone from the wing back to the spoiler and that, obviously, threw a wrench in our performance this year, but I really see improvement in this team. We got some things figured out at Dover a few weeks ago. And then, after starting from the rear in Kansas, had a very strong race car and drove up to another top 15 finish. We?re still not where we want to be, but we?re getting closer. Hopefully that will continue to improve this weekend and we can get another showing like we did earlier this year.?

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET ? 16TH IN STANDINGS: "Our program has gotten stronger this year and we've been happy with the turn around of our performance at Auto Club Speedway. If it wasn't for a blown motor in the spring I think we could of easily competed for a top spot at the end of the day. The Target team is looking for some redemption heading back to California this time around."

DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 88 AMP ENERGY/NATIONAL GUARD CHEVROLET ? 17TH IN STANDINGS: "We have had some decent runs at California, but just haven't had the luck. The thing about California is that you can hunt around as the groove changes. You've got to have that adjustability in your setup. My teammates have been good there, and they are a good reference."

Sam Hornish Jr. May Return to Indy 500

LAS VEGAS -- Three-time IndyCar champ and 2006 Indianapolis 500 winner Sam Hornish Jr.'s NASCAR future remains in limbo, but his team owner, Roger Penske, said Thursday that he will likely field Hornish in the Daytona 500 and possibly in the Indianapolis 500, too.

Penske confirmed the news during a sponsorship announcement at his Ferrari dealership in the Wynn Las Vegas Thursday, where the team unveiled Kurt Busch's new No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Dodge in the Sprint Cup Series and a similar design for the iconic No. 3 Penske car that three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves will drive at Indy next May.

For all his success in open-wheel racing, Hornish has never managed to make a big splash in NASCAR's big leagues, with only a pair of top-five finishes and eight top-10 efforts in 108 starts over three full seasons. And with no primary sponsor signed for his No. 77 Dodge, Penske said Hornish still doesn't have a full schedule set for 2011. Penske said both a limited Cup and Nationwide Series slate were possibilities.

"I told him that, at the end of the day, I'd much rather do a program where we can support you 100 percent than have some pick-up program with not enough sponsors,'' Penske said. "We need to have the continuity. We have a number of opportunities, but we just couldn't get them closed at this point.

Oh, for the love of heaven: Paris Hilton now has a MotoGP team

Paris Hilton is getting into racing.

Yes, this is where we are now, people. Only good news in all this, at least if you're a fan of four-wheel racing? It's not NASCAR, it's MotoGP.

Hilton has announced that she's involved with — but not in that way, we're assuming — a new team in the 2011 125cc World Championship season called, deep breath: "SuperMartxé VIP by Paris Hilton." ("SuperMartxé VIP" is a "dance party series" based out of Ibiza. Yes, really.) The dance series decided to get into the racing business, and brought Paris along for the ride.

The formal announcement will come Saturday. Hilton was reportedly so excited about the idea that she bought in as a part owner of the team. (Sample Tweets from Ms. Hilton: "This is going to be fun!" and "I love motorcycles.")

The team, run in conjunction with By Queroseno Racing, will field two drivers, Sergio Gadea and Maverick Viñales, and I hope these poor suckers know what they're getting into. The 125cc level is MotoGP's entry series, with Moto2 and MotoGP comprising the higher levels.

Part of her contract stipulates that Hilton has to appear at five sanctioned races during the 2011 season. Please oh please oh please let her massacre sing the National Anthem of whatever country she's in. Do this for us.

Suddenly having to deal with Danicamania doesn't seem so bad, does it?

Rick Hendrick buys new Chevy Volt for $225,000

You'd think a guy who owns a fleet of NASCAR rides and 10 championships wouldn't need to pay for a car, but Rick Hendrick did anyway, ponying up $225,000 for the second Chevy Volt to roll off the production line.

The Volt, an electric/combustion hybrid, can run up to 50 miles on battery power alone before having to kick in the engine. It's already been named the best car of the year by both Motor Trend and Automobile magazines. It also carries a $41,000 sticker price.

So why did Hendrick go five times over the asking price? He's a car dealer himself, doesn't he know how to negotiate? Truth is, the money will go toward a program to benefit science, math, technology and engineering studies in the Detroit Public Schools System.

"This was an opportunity to own a piece of history while giving back to the community," Hendrick said in a press release. "I have been a Chevrolet dealer for more than 30 years, and the Volt is one of the most exciting and important new cars since we opened our first dealership in 1976."

Knowing the throw-weight Hendrick has in NASCAR, we fully expect to see electric cars zipping quietly around the ovals within two years.

[Thanks to reader Mike for the tip.]

Wreck Week: The most controversial wrecks in NASCAR history

As we wrap up Wreck Week, we offer up this recollection of the most controversial wrecks in NASCAR history. Add in your favorites below.

Every wreck has its share of controversy -- who's at fault, who didn't give space or who took too much, who mistimed their pass or got too aggressive. But only a few wrecks have an impact long after dents have been hammered out and tires replaced. Some, in fact, have changed the face of NASCAR entirely. Here, then, are the ten most controversial wrecks in NASCAR history, with video where available and appropriate:

1. Bobby Allison, Talladega 1987
Talladega is known as a "superspeedway" with good reason; without restriction, cars can reach unfathomable speeds there. In 1987, Bill Elliott qualified for the Winston 500 with a still-record 212.809 mph, and in the ensuing race, NASCAR realized the very real dangers of such speeds. On lap 22, Bobby Allison took flight and ended up cruising along the retaining wall that separated spectators from the track. Had the car gone all the way into the stands, the tragedy would have been unspeakable; fortunately, injuries to fans were relatively minor. As a result of this wreck, though, NASCAR mandated restrictor plates at Talladega and Daytona. Drivers and fans may not care for them, but they're far better than the potential alternative.

More follows.

2. Cale Yarborough and the brothers Allison, 1979 Daytona 500
The stars aligned for NASCAR at the 1979 Daytona 500. It was the first race ever televised wire-to-wire, and with much of the northeast trapped under snow, it was the only show in town. Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison hammered each other through the final laps until both wrecked, spinning into the infield grass and allowing Richard Petty to take the win. As Petty cruised to victory, Yarborough, Allison and Bobby Allison got into a huge infield fistfight. It was an astonishing finish - and one which cemented NASCAR's roughhousing image, for good or ill, in the heads of an entire generation of fans.

3. Ricky Rudd, Atlanta 1990
In the last race of the year, Ricky Rudd lost control of his car as he entered Atlanta's pit road. He spun into Bill Elliott's car, which was undergoing a tire change. (You can see Rudd's car spinning toward Elliott's in the center right of the photo below.) Elliott's rear tire changer, Mike Rich, was caught in the wreck and later died. Two other crew members were injured. As a result, NASCAR altered pit-road rules and mandated a pit-road speed limit.

4. Dale Earnhardt spins Terry Labonte, Bristol 1999
One of the Intimidator's final wins, and one of his most controversial, came in 1999 when Terry Labonte charged into the lead at Bristol. In the race's final laps, Earnhardt turned Labonte around and took the checkers for himself. Whether you thought the move was good hard racin' or flat-out dirty probably depended on whether you had #3 memorabilia in your collection.

5. NASCAR's biggest crash, Daytona 1960
With a stunning 68 cars in the field for a Sportsman race in Daytona, accidents were bound to happen -- but no one could have predicted what happened. A 37-car accident resulted in few injuries, but NASCAR realized that it wouldn't be so fortunate forever. Fields were cut down significantly in the wake of this gargantuan wreck.

6. Fireball Roberts, Charlotte 1964
While running in the middle of the field, the popular driver Fireball Roberts was caught up in a wreck begun by Ned Jarrett and Junior Johnson. Roberts' car hit the wall and burst into flames. Jarrett pulled Roberts from the wreckage, but burns already covered 80 percent of his body. He died after six weeks in a Charlotte hospital, and in the wake of his passing NASCAR mandated far more stringent fire-safety gear, new fuel cells and on-board fire extinguishing gear.

7. Michael Waltrip, Bristol 1990
In 1990, Michael Waltrip appeared headed for a fairly standard wall-scrape at Bristol. But a gate hadn't been properly closed, and Waltrip's car absolutely vaporized. Somehow, Waltrip was barely scratched. Even more surprisingly, Mike Harmon suffered almost the exact same wreck in 2002, when once again the gate wasn't properly closed. The fact that neither driver was seriously injured is a minor miracle - and a reminder that NASCAR always needs to be vigilant about even the smallest potential flaws in track design.

8. The deaths of Dale Earnhardt and Neil Bonnett
Both Dale Earnhardt Sr. (below, left) and Neil Bonnett died in accidents at the Daytona Speedway, accidents that were tragic but painfully understandable. (Earnhardt's death led to safety improvements that have saved many drivers since then.) The controversy surrounding both came with the release, or attempted release, of their autopsy photos. The families of both drivers sought to prevent the release of the photos, and Earnhardt's case in particular became a landmark in celebrity privacy litigation.

9. Kyle Busch turns Dale Earnhardt Jr., Richmond 2008
Kyle Busch had already garnered a rep as a hotheaded -- but extremely talented -- driver when he and Junior tangled in Richmond early in the 2008 season. Busch had been booted from Hendrick Motorsports to make room for Junior, and with Junior hard in search of his first win at Hendrick, Busch wasn't about to make it easy on him. The resulting wreck sent the entire Junior Nation into a blood frenzy for Busch that hasn't subsided to this day.

10. Brad Keselowski puts Carl Edwards into the wall, Talladega 2009
When you're racing for the checkers, anything goes, as Carl Edwards discovered in the closing yards of Talladega. Keselowski put Edwards high into the fence, kicking off a two-year fight between the two that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in auto damage and several major, race-altering wrecks. And even though it's nearly two years old, this clip still makes you wonder how Edwards survived.

And there are many more; any NASCAR fan has a few additions to this list. Make your case in the comments below.

The fresh asphalt laid at NASCAR's Mecca -- all 50,000 tons of it -- will get its first big workout next week.

At least 18 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers are scheduled to test the new surface of the high banks of the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway Dec. 15 and 16 as part of a Goodyear tire test, the track said Wednesday.

It will mark the first time NASCAR drivers will have driven on a new surface at the Florida superspeedway since the last time it was repaved in 1978.

"This place is going to have a totally new look to the drivers and the teams," two-time Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart said in October. "We're going to fill every square inch of the race track because the surface is so even now."

Goodyear will utilize the test to develop appropriate tire compounds for the preseason Sprint Cup Series test to be held in the middle of January.

The track was faced with repaving after a pot hole opened up in turn two during this year's Daytona 500, forcing substantial, hours-long delays to the race. Essentially, the force of the cars began to tear an ever-widening gouge into the typically smooth surface.

Your questions answered - Brazilian Grand Prix

Do I think Red Bull should have allowed Mark Webber to win in Brazil instead of Sebastian Vettel? Do I think Mercedes and Renault will benefit from such a tight battle this season? Do I agree with Bernie Ecclestone's comment that Lotus are the only new team to have contributed this season? Do I think heads should roll at McLaren? Who do I think has been the best driver in the bottom five teams? And the big question - who is going to win the title?

Watch my answers below.

Video: The New Year's Eve snowmobile jump that's not to be

Red Bull has started an unofficial New Year's Eve tradition of ridiculous stunts, sending lunatic daredevils on death-defying leaps. In 2008, Robbie Maddison cycled up onto, and then off of, the Arc de Triomphe in Vegas, and last year, future NASCAR driver Travis Pastrana jumped 269 feet in his rally car in Long Beach, Calif.

This year was to be no different, with snowmobile racer Levi LaVallee attempting a world-record leap in a snowmobile in San Diego, to be broadcast live on ESPN. Alas, it's not to be, as LaVallee injured himself and won't be able to jump. (He'll be fine, thanks for asking.)

However, LaVallee -- who once performed a double backflip in a snowmobile, and is the 2008 Winter X Games 12's top athlete -- did pull off a record-breaking jump in practice. Check this 361-foot leap, which cleared the previous best by almost 60 feet:

Shame we won't be able to see that live. Unless, of course, one of you wants to step up and take Levi's place. Any takers?

D1 Food Battle

It's a little known feature of D1, but after the D1 drift competition, the battles continue with a high-speed food battle!

The food battle competitors get into teams of 2 or 3 depicted by their sponsors i.e. "Yokohama team" which is the Team Orange guys, "Toyo team" which is Kawabata and Suenaga Masao etc.

The whole aim of the game: to devour a mystery food and then a main dish as fast as possible.

As in the case of yesterday's D1 food battle, the surprise food was egg tofu with pickled ginger on top and the main dish was a whole watermelon!

The winning team yesterday was the Yokohama team (Team Orange's Kuma and Igu) despite the fact that Kumakubo hates egg tofu and Igusa san hates pickled ginger!

Obviously not as heart racing as watching them drift but a good laugh and fun end to an awesome day.

Despite Bankruptcy Case, Management Preparing For The 2011 Racing Season At The Waterford Speedbowl

Despite multiple recently published internet stories forecasting an imminent foreclosure action against the ownership group of the Waterford Speedbowl, the management team at the track continues to move forward with its bankruptcy case in the courts and in their preparations for racing at the facility in 2011.

Speedbowl-Logo.jpgIn recent weeks, Phil Smith, an individual who has stories published on multiple local racing websites, has led a campaign insisting that the Speedbowl's bankruptcy case would be dismissed by the courts and that a foreclosure auction would soon follow, though there's little evidence that any sort of dismissal is near.

D1 Street Legal 2010 Ebisu West Course (Pics)

Last weekend on a blazing hot Sunday September 5th, the 5th round of D1 Street Legal was held at Ebisu west (nishi) course.

Emily from Powervehicles.com made it through qualifying for the ladies "Venus Challenge" in her bright pink S14 silvia on the Saturday and ran in the first battle of the day on Sunday.

Unfortunately, she was beaten by the #1 qualifier of the day (3UP green 180sx).

Andy from Powervehicles.com and Chris Dejager entered but just missed the cut on the Saturday so they didn't get to run on the Sunday.

The winner of the D1SL round was Tanaka in his red and black S14 Silvia who went against D1 driver Tezuka Tsuyoshi in his white R34 Skyline.

Tanaka knocked out Nakamura early in the battles so everyone had his eye on him on the day. Great driving and he deserved the win!

Another great result came from Sumika (Team Orange - yellow 180sx) who placed 1st in the ladies Venus Challenge and 3rd in the Street Legal.

Maybe one day Disco Stu will make a D1 SL appearance.

Actually, this day I got a few laps practice in on School course and minami before brushing the wall and bending my tie rod.

Oh well, practice makes perfect :)

Stagea Ute? Can It Drift?

Sometimes I browse Yahoo Auctions for cars and parts and come across some pretty funky stuff on there.

Here's a Nissan Stagea Truck/Ute with a RB25DET and manual conversion. It might not be to everyone's liking but I think it's pretty damn cool. Especially with those 19" deep dish chrome wheels.

I assume it's been made into RWD.... Wouldn't you turn some heads showing up to the drift track in this?

It's for sale too at the moment for a only 450,000 JPY on Yahoo Auctions. That price is more than double the price of a regular Stagea in Japan but for something this modified and cool, not a bad price!

It can be registered in Japan as far as I know but not sure about overseas. You'd need to check with your state's road laws and engineering rules to see if something this radical can be street legal.
