Travis Pastrana grows familiar with the concept of wrecking

Hey, not everybody can be Trevor Bayne.

Motorsports superstar/lunatic Travis Pastrana took some turns around Phoenix International Raceway as part of a NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race Thursday night. He wrecked twice and finished 25th, but that's not really the point here. The idea is to give him as much comfort as possible in four-wheel racing so that he'll be more prepared for his Nationwide debut at Indianapolis this summer.

The 25th-place finish was a bit of a step down from his last NASCAR race, the Toyota All-Star Showdown at which he finished sixth. But it's a gradual process, and even Pastrana recognizes that. His goals, he says, are straightforward:

"To line up in a Nationwide car or hopefully eventually a Sprint [Cup] car and people say, 'This guy can drive, he’s not just a motocrosser; he can come over here and not be a nuisance on the track.' "

Pastrana's not necessarily taking a shot at fellow celebrity driver Danica Patrick, but the comparisons are obvious. And like Patrick, Pastrana will enter the Nationwide Series with a huge splash. He'll run in an X-games motorcycle competition two days before his Indianapolis debut, then return to the X-games for the Rally car competition after he's done. ESPN will be tracking every step of the journey.

Next up for Pastrana: a K&N Pro Series East event in April at Richmond International Raceway.
